Maintaining Your Jewelry’s Beauty: The Basics

Basic Cleaning Process for Jewelry

You can do a lot to help keep your gold and platinum jewelry bright and sparkly at home. Regular cleaning with a mild soap and running water will remove dirt and oils. An old toothbrush is an excellent tool for doing this. After cleaning the jewelry, place it (still wet) on a dish towel and put a palm full of baking soda on it. Scrub the baking soda over the jewelry with the wet toothbrush and your fingers (Don’t worry, it actually softens your skin!).Remember, this process will not scratch your jewelry as baking soda is non-abrasive.  Rinse well in running warm water and pat dry on a towel. If the items need more cleaning, bring them to us for professional service. This process will also work for costume jewelry. Here is a quick summary chart of basic cleaning steps for your rings, bracelets, necklaces, and keepsakes

  1. Clean with mild soap and water
  2. Once dry add a layer of baking soda by working it into the surface of the jewelry
  3. Rinse off the baking soda and dry with a towel

Caring For Sterling Silver

Sterling silver will turn dark with exposure to the sulfide pollutants in the air. This can be reversed without hours of polishing. Start by hand washing the piece well with dish soap, rinsing well, and then wiping with Tarnex. Just wipe it on and rinse it off….never soak any jewelry or silver in cleaner for more than one minute. After rinsing the item well, rub it all over with baking soda with your hands, then rinse and dry well. It will return to a bright and shiny surface. If it needs more work than that, bring in for our jeweler to look at.

Here is a summary of the sterling silver cleaning steps:

  1. Hand wash the sterling jewelry
  2. Rinse and wipe with Tarnex

**Do not soak silver for more than one minute
